In September 1967, a premiere of theatrical historical significance took place in the Pest Theatre. It was the inauguration of the new theatre and the beginning of an unparalleled success story. This diary is the final self-expression of a repressed man on the road to madness, living without a chance of escape, locked in himself, hopelessly in love. Gogol reveals this psychological pathology with grotesque vision and clinical precision, yet every moment of it is deeply moving and human.
